Binaural beats for sleep, anxiety, focus, study and meditation

Every one of these gets asked separately, and most articles answer all five the same way. They should not be answered the same way, because the evidence behind them is wildly uneven.
Here is each, worst-case first where the worst case is real.
Anxiety: the strongest case
This is where binaural beats have their best support, and it is genuinely reasonable.
Garcia-Argibay, Santed and Reales 2019 pooled 22 studies and 35 effect sizes and found g = 0.45, a medium effect across anxiety, attention and memory, consistent across those outcomes.
Baseanu 2024 reviewed twelve studies on anxiety and depression and found binaural beats did better than silence and better than noise-cancelling headphones. That second comparison is the interesting one, because it starts to rule out "any quiet helps".
Now the caveat, which most write-ups omit. Xiong 2025 pooled fourteen trials with 1,047 participants and found a large effect, SMD −1.38 - alongside I² = 91.6%. I² measures how much of the disagreement between studies is real rather than chance, and above 75% is conventionally "considerable". At 91.6% the studies are barely measuring the same thing, and the average tells you much less than its size suggests.
Verdict: the best-supported use, with a wide spread behind the average.
Sleep: one study at one specific rate
The claim you will usually see is that delta-range beats produce delta-range brain activity and therefore sleep. The general form of that claim is in trouble: Ingendoh 2023 found 8 of 14 studies contradicted the entrainment hypothesis.
What does exist is narrower and better. Jirakittayakorn and Wongsawat 2018 tested a 3 Hz beat during sleep and found more delta activity and longer stage N3, the deep phase. One small experiment, and explicitly not an insomnia trial.
If sleep is your actual goal, the strongest thing in this app is not a beat at all. Ding 2025 pooled twelve randomised trials with 1,301 participants on noise masking and found sleep quality improved, and Khandelwal 2025 found sleep efficiency improved across seven trials. Steady broadband sound stops the door downstairs waking you. That mechanism is dull and it works.
Verdict: try 3 Hz if you like, but masking has the better evidence.
Focus: mixed, and one result points the wrong way
Beauchene 2017 found a 15 Hz beat improved verbal working memory accuracy and changed cortical connectivity. Small, and cognitive findings elsewhere are inconsistent.
Melnichuk, Cooper and Hawk 2025 tested gamma beats on 80 students in a within-subjects crossover and found improved attention with EEG-confirmed entrainment, though the effect varied by carrier and there was none on vigilance decline.
Against that, at least one large study found binaural beats made a task harder rather than easier. Not neutral. Worse. That result belongs in any honest answer about focus and is almost never mentioned.
Goodin 2012 tested 7 Hz theta and 16 Hz beta against a control and found no frequency-specific increase in EEG power. Lopez-Caballero and Escera 2017 tested beats across several rates and failed to find enhanced EEG power or emotional arousal - a null result, reported as one.
Verdict: genuinely mixed, with real evidence on both sides.
Study: almost nothing specific to it
"Binaural beats for studying" is one of the most-searched versions of this question and one of the least supported.
There is no body of research on binaural beats and study performance as such. What exists is the working-memory and attention work above, which is small, inconsistent, and conducted in lab tasks rather than over a revision session.
What is better supported is duller: a steady, structureless sound is easier to work through than an unpredictable one, and that is mostly about masking and the absence of lyrics rather than any beat rate. Any of the noise colours does that job, and so does rain.
Verdict: the weakest of the five. Use whatever you can ignore.
Meditation: the evidence runs out, and it may matter least
There is very little research on binaural beats and meditation specifically, and what generalises from the anxiety work is not meditation-specific.
This is also the use where that matters least. A meditation practice is self-evaluating in a way a sleep claim is not: you can tell whether a session went well, and the sound either helped you settle or it did not. You do not need a study to arbitrate.
Theta rates are the conventional choice, and 6 Hz has Jirakittayakorn 2017 behind it: more theta, including the frontal-midline theta associated with focused attention. An EEG resemblance, which is not the same as the mental state itself.

The pattern worth noticing: the uses with the most confident marketing are not the ones with the most evidence. Study and meditation get sold hardest and are supported least.
