Binaural beats vs isochronic tones

Both are attempts at the same thing: a rhythmic auditory pulse at a chosen rate. They arrive by completely different routes, and only one of them survives being played on a speaker.

The mechanical difference

A binaural beat is not in the sound. Two steady tones, one per ear, a few hertz apart, and the pulse is assembled by your auditory system from the difference between them.

An isochronic tone is in the sound. One tone, switched rapidly on and off. The pulse is physically present in the waveform, which you could see on an oscilloscope.

That single distinction drives everything else.

What it means in practice

Isochronic tones work on a speaker. Binaural beats cannot. On a speaker the two binaural channels mix in the air before reaching either ear, and the effect is gone. The pulsing in an isochronic tone is already in the signal, so it survives any playback route.

Isochronic tones are more obtrusive. A hard on-off pulse is a sharper thing to listen to than a slow swell. People who find binaural beats easy to forget about often find isochronic tones difficult to ignore, which matters over an eight-hour sleep session more than over twenty minutes of focus.

Binaural beats need matched ears. If your hearing differs significantly between ears, the two tones are not arriving as the mechanism assumes.

The evidence is not close to equal

This is where most comparison articles stop, and it is the part that should decide it.

Binaural beats have a pooled meta-analysis behind them. Garcia-Argibay, Santed and Reales 2019 combined 22 studies and 35 effect sizes and found g = 0.45, a medium effect on anxiety, attention and memory.

Isochronic tones have essentially nothing. When Ingendoh 2023 reviewed the entrainment literature, only 2 of 17 studies used isochronic tones at all. Two. That is too few to pool, and the review's overall verdict on entrainment was that it is inconclusive at best.

Chaieb, Wilpert, Reber and Fell 2015 reviewed auditory beat stimulation more broadly and reported effects while noting the mechanisms remain unresolved. It is a narrative review, not a meta-analysis, and it produces no pooled estimate.

So the honest summary is: one of these has modest evidence with a contested mechanism, and the other has almost no direct evidence either way. Isochronic tones are not disproven. They are unstudied, which is a different and less satisfying thing to say.

We grade them "barely studied" in the app for that reason, and we would rather say it than let the pairing imply the two options are equally backed.

Which to actually use

If you have headphones on, use binaural beats. That is where what evidence exists is concentrated.

If you cannot wear headphones - sleeping beside someone, working somewhere headphones are impractical, or you simply dislike them - isochronic tones are the only one of the two that functions at all, and "unstudied" beats "mechanically impossible in this setup".

If neither appeals, a plain recording of rain has better evidence than both: Ding 2025 pooled twelve randomised trials with 1,301 participants and found sleep quality improved. Masking is the least mystical thing in this field and the best supported.
